TIM: American banks are very skittish. This represents considerable leverage for us on the Albanian issue.

BEN: Let’s prepare a joint letter to State urging them to take a more pro-active position.

JOE:

Ethnic Albanians here are very concerned. They feel that  the Albanians in Kosovo are being baited by Serbs so they can come in and suppress Albanian ‘separatism’ through violent means.

SEYMOUR: Other minorities are also concerned about human rights and prospects for demonstration.

JOE:

The Albanians will be used as scapegoats unless we act now!

Slovenia and Croatia may try to secede leaving the Albanians to bear the brunt of Serbian nationalism.

TIM: Tom Simons is accompanying John Whitehead, the Under Secretary, through Eastern Europe. Won’t return until October 22nd. Yugoslavia is looming more in importance. We encourage you to send the letter to the State Department. We do share your concerns.

BEN: Follow-up with your statement to Yugoslavia.

JOE: State needs to send a strong signal now! The press is not doing their job here in the U. S.!!

TOM:

Our concern is so in line with stated U. S. policy interests, we want to work together with you on it. State needs to be more responsive. For example, State says our position on Iraq is premature while bodies of children are piled up for all to see in graphic color! We want to preserve the territorial integrity of Yugoslavia and, within that framework, we want to see basic human rights for all, including the Albanians in Kosovo and the other parts of Yugoslavia.
